OU's Bradford opens up a ... a little

Chuck Carlton   E-mail   News tips

As both a quarterback and an interview, Oklahoma's Sam Bradford displays remarkable efficiency.

While Bradford will never be Mr. Soundbite, he did offer a few interesting tidbits to ESPN. He said discipline remains his strongest attribute as a quarterback. When asked to do word association about Oklahoma rivals, he answered "maybe a little bit of revenge this year" when the topic turned to Texas Tech. And he noted that Kyle Field is "crazy loud."

Here's the interview in its entirety.

Junior quarterback Justin Willis, a two-year starter for the Mustangs, spoke after practice today about being notified that he was No. 3 on the depth chart. Coach June Jones made the official announcement Monday.

Willis seemed to take the situation in stride.

"It's hard of course, but the best way to handle it is to support it," said Willis, SMU's career leader in touchdown passes (51). "I can be a better person through all of this just by supporting it and keep working hard because I'm going to get a shot. When I do, I'll run with it."

Florida running back Mon Williams, the former Mesquite Horn star, has rebounded from a torn ACL suffered before the 2007 season and should be a factor in the Gators' backfield this season.

Williams said his knee is now about 95 percent and told the Gainesville Sun that he's nervously awaiting Florida's season opener with Hawaii.

"I'm real anxious, because my teammates, they call me all the time and ask me is my knee OK," said Williams said. "They're always worried about me and stuff like that so I'm real anxious."

Top hoop prospect mulling Baylor, OSU

John Wall, a 6-3 guard from Raleigh, N.C. considered by many to be the nation's top basketball recruit, remains undecided, the Raleigh News and Observer reports.

The Big 12 remains squarely in the picture. Wall is considering Baylor and Oklahoma State as well as Memphis, Kansas, Kentucky, Oregon and N.C. State. He also addressed lingering rumors that he's bound for Baylor, which added Wall's club coach, Dwon Clifton, to its staff.

"Dwon and I never had that type of agreement," Wall told the News and Observer. "I was interested in Baylor before he went there. He told me that it would be great if I decide to go to Baylor, but that I needed to make the best decision I could for myself and that he was proud of me wherever I go."

Should Bennett have stayed at A&M?

3:09 PM Mon, Aug 18, 2008 |  |
Chuck Carlton   E-mail   News tips

ESPN's Tim Griffin believes that current Cowboy tight end Martellus Bennett could have been much better served had he remained at Texas A&M for a season under Mike Sherman.

I can't say I disagree with the sentiment. Bennett is living proof that potential and performance are not always linked. He stat line always seemed to read two catches for 18 yards. Maybe it was the Franchione system. Maybe it was Bennett being exposed. Who knows? We'll find out soon if he's ready for the NFL.

Tech's Sesay to have instant impact

2:01 PM Mon, Aug 18, 2008 |  |
Chuck Carlton   E-mail   News tips

Texas Tech's Brandon Sesay is one of 12 junior college transfers who Rivals.com believes will have an immediate impact this year. Here's Rivals' take:

Already hailed as Tech's premier defensive prospect in the Mike Leach era, the thought is Sesay can be a dominant pass rusher for a team that could use one. Originally a Georgia signee, Sesay posted a dozen sacks as a freshman at Northwest CC in Senatobia, Miss. He followed that with four sacks in six games as a sophomore at College of the Sequoias last season. The Red Raiders had just 11 sacks in conference play last season, and in the pass-oriented Big 12, a strong pass rush is a must.

Rivals also listed Florida's Emmanuel Moody (Coppell) and Ole Miss' Jevan Snead (Stephenville) as two key four-year school transfers who should help their teams.

SMU: Jones confirms that it's Mitchell, Smith at QB

12:18 PM Mon, Aug 18, 2008 |  |
Bobbi Roquemore   E-mail   News tips

SMU coach June Jones confirmed after practice that two true freshmen, Katy's Bo Levi Mitchell and Rockwall's Braden Smith, are the quarterbacks who will receive the most reps as the Mustangs prepare for the Rice game on Aug. 29.

"Bo and Braden, after going through all of the tapes, I feel like they have a better understanding I think in executing a little bit better, so we're going to give them the reps," Jones said. "We'll continue to give the other guys reps too, but those guys will get the focus."

Junior Justin Willis, who started 22 of the last 23 games at SMU, and redshirt freshman Logan Turner will be the No. 3 quarterbacks, Jones said. Freshman Winston Gamso will redshirt.

Quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison went as far as naming Levi No. 1 and Smith No. 2. He elaborated on what made Levi and Smith the top choices.

SMU: QB race appears to be decided

10:06 AM Mon, Aug 18, 2008 |  |
Bobbi Roquemore   E-mail   News tips

UNIVERSITY PARK - June Jones said after Saturday's practice that on Monday, the top two quarterbacks would receive the most reps with the first team.

Two true freshmen, Bo Levi Mitchell and Braden Smith, have received all the snaps since 9:40 a.m.

Junior Justin Willis, who started the 22 of the last 23 games, is kneeling in the end zone near the first team. He has not taken a snap with the first team.

Redshirt freshman Logan Turner is floating between the scout team and first team.

True freshman Winston Gamso is working with the scout team only.

Barring a late-practice switch, it looks like it's Mitchell and Smith.

SMU: QBs to be decided today

8:49 AM Mon, Aug 18, 2008 |  |
Bobbi Roquemore   E-mail   News tips

Mustangs coach June Jones has maintained that he'll narrow down his quarterback choices from five to two today. We're at practice to watch the situation unfold.

Speculation has been running rampant for the last 24 hours on who is No. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Will it be Justin Willis, starter of the last 22 of 23 games at the Hilltop? Or freshman Bo Levi Mitchell, who looks sharper with each passing day? Or Logan Turner, whose spring practice experienced put him miles ahead of the rest right from the start? Or the darkhorses, true freshmen Braden Smith and Winston Gamso?

The popular view on the PonyStampede.com message board is that Mitchell is one of the two players.

An observer said this morning that Mitchell was the first QB on the field before practice, and as fellow players came out on the field, they patted him on the back.

What Schnellenberger has built

5:26 PM Sun, Aug 17, 2008 |  |
Chuck Carlton   E-mail   News tips

Howard Schnellenberger's critique of Texas' talent (awesome) and toughness (not so much) has obscured the coaching job he's done building a program at Florida Atlantic. ESPN's Mark Schlabach tracked down Schnellenberger, who compared current FAU quarterback Rusty Smith to a young Bernie Kosar.

Smith has bought in to what Schnellenberger is preaching. "It's definitely going to make the game a lot tougher and put Texas on its toes," Smith told ESPN. "They know we're coming to town to take care of business. We're going to give them a good game. I believe that 100 percent. I can honestly say that. I know when we go to Texas, it will be a very good game."

Done.

N. Mexico St., Holbrook focused on bowl

Never mind the quarterback awards or the chance for mega passing numbers. If Chase Holbrook can somehow get New Mexico State to a bowl for the first time since 1960, he'll be fondly remembered in perpetuity by the fans in Las Cruces.

"We've been saying it for two years now," the L.D. Bell product tells the Associated Press. "Those seasons haven't turned out the way we wanted, but I really have a good feeling about this one."

Schnellenberger's quotes live on

Whatever Florida Atlantic coach Howard Schnellenberger said to a student reporter earlier this week about Texas' toughness is probably irrelevant. The quotes have traveled to Austin and back and seem to have resonated with the Florida Atlantic players, according to the Palm Beach Post. "If we weren't fired up before, we're fired up now," safety Carldayle Brantley told the newspaper. "He feels we are able to compete this year."

Bennett back in the picture at A&M

5:19 PM Sat, Aug 16, 2008 |  |
Chuck Carlton   E-mail   News tips

Senior defensive end Michael Bennett has apparently resurrected his Texas A&M career. His football future looked uncertain after he was declared academically ineligible for last season's Alamo Bowl.

Bennett tackled Mike Goodson for a safety in practice Saturday, drawing praise from coach Mike Sherman.

"I'm counting on Michael Bennett big-time," Sherman said. "He's had his back to the wall. People have 'X-ed' him out, but he's fought back. He dug his own hole, but he's climbing out. As a football player, I thought he had a good day. He plays with his hands, plays with some toughness and passion. I'm excited about Michael Bennett. I think he's going to have a heck of a season."

Bennett recorded 43 tackles last season, including six for loss, and was honorable mention all-Big 12.
